Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Women’s involvement in political decision-making has gained significant attention globally, particularly in emerging democracies like Nigeria. Despite the increasing number of women participating in politics, their representation in key political decision-making roles remains limited. In Jalingo LGA, Taraba State, women’s political participation and influence in governance processes are often overshadowed by traditional patriarchal structures, yet they play crucial roles within their communities, both informally and formally. Women’s engagement in political decision-making, whether through political party participation, civil society, or grassroots activism, is essential for promoting inclusive governance that reflects the interests of all citizens.
Over the years, the Nigerian government has made strides in promoting women’s involvement in politics, including the establishment of gender quotas and other affirmative action measures. However, barriers such as socio-cultural expectations, economic limitations, and gender biases often hinder women’s full participation. This study seeks to investigate the role of women in political decision-making in Jalingo LGA, exploring how their political agency shapes local governance and whether women’s involvement in politics can contribute to more effective and inclusive decision-making processes.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
In Jalingo LGA, the underrepresentation of women in political decision-making positions persists despite some progress made in empowering women politically. The limited involvement of women in formal political processes often results in the neglect of women’s unique concerns and interests in governance, as well as a lack of gender-responsive policies at the local level. This raises the problem of whether the low levels of female participation in political decision-making are due to cultural, institutional, or systemic barriers, and what implications this has for the overall political landscape in Jalingo LGA. This study aims to fill this gap by examining how women participate in political decision-making in Jalingo LGA and the challenges they face in the process.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1. To explore the extent of women’s involvement in political decision-making in Jalingo LGA.
2. To examine the barriers women face in participating in political decision-making in Jalingo LGA.
3. To assess the impact of women’s participation in political decision-making on local governance in Jalingo LGA.
1.4 Research Questions
1. To what extent are women involved in political decision-making in Jalingo LGA?
2. What are the key challenges women face in participating in political decision-making in Jalingo LGA?
3. How does women’s participation in political decision-making impact governance in Jalingo LGA?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
1. Women’s participation in political decision-making significantly influences governance in Jalingo LGA.
2. Socio-cultural barriers significantly limit women’s participation in political decision-making in Jalingo LGA.
3. Increased women’s participation in political decision-making leads to more inclusive and gender-responsive local governance in Jalingo LGA.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to the ongoing discourse on women’s political participation, particularly at the local government level. By focusing on Jalingo LGA, the research will provide insights into the challenges and opportunities women face in political decision-making and highlight the importance of gender inclusion in political processes. The findings will be beneficial to policymakers, gender advocates, and local government officials seeking to promote gender equality and strengthen democratic practices. It will also provide recommendations on strategies to enhance women’s participation and influence in local governance.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is confined to Jalingo LGA, Taraba State, and focuses on women’s participation in political decision-making within this locality. The research will not examine broader gender dynamics across other regions of Nigeria. Limitations include potential biases in respondents’ views, particularly from male political leaders or entrenched cultural norms that may affect the willingness of women to speak openly about their experiences.
